Have We Lost Our Vision as the Church?

by Glenn BroceIn Matt 28:19, Jesus tells the church to go make disciples of all nations. The word "nations" in Greek is ethnos, which means tribes, races, peoples or nations.

As the church, we are so excited to see one person come to Jesus, and rightly so. But the commission was to disciple whole tribes, whole races, whole peoples, whole nations.  Our efforts and strategies and tactics are all focused on getting an individual(s) saved, when that wasn't what God told us to do. That is much to low level thinking.

We sell ourselves and the commission short. We are so short sighted. Maybe the task seemed too big, so rather than concentrate and plan on discipling people groups, we focus our efforts on individuals.

We need to think bigger. We need to plan bigger. We need to match resources and strategies to reach whole people groups. We need to go beyond salvation to individuals and begin discipling nations.

In Mark 16, Jesus tells us to go into all the world (Greek is kosmos) and preach the gospel to every creature. The concept between Matthew and Mark preaching and discipling on a LARGE scale.

"Go" (in Greek -poreuomai;) means to traverse, travel, depart, go (away, forth, one's way, up), (make a, take a) journey, walk. The same word is used in both Matthew and Mark.

Are we just satisfied when one person gets saved? Have we then just done our part?

Does that mean that everyone needs to become a missionary? Probably not. What does it mean? That as a Church, we need to get more serious about discipling nations and preaching the good news to all creatures, tribes, races, peoples and nations than feeling good about our programs, and groups and activities that do nothing to advance God's Kingdom to the nations but serve our own self interests.

Go, depart, travel, take a journey and preach the Good News that God has provided a way to be part of His family through what Jesus His Son did, to ALL creatures, tribes, races, peoples and nations. And when they believe- disciple them. Bring transformation to them- Spirit, Soul and Body.

These are the last words that Jesus spoke to his church while on earth. Are we following his instructions?
